The Caucasian Chalk Circle
The Bertolt Brecht tale of a young servant girl who rescues a baby abandoned by a corrupt governor and his vain wife following a military coup in a provincial town in Eastern Europe. Risking her life to protect the hapless infant, the girl embarks on a journey of mutual survival that ultimately raises the question of parental rights: the woman who gave birth to child or the one who sustained it?
With a stirring score by avant-garde composer Nathaniel Stookey and the play’s setting as a backdrop the video captures the depths of Brecht’s world a microcosm of humanity at it’s most innocent and vile; inhabiting a war-torn landscape of decimation, rubble, and debris all in the shadow of monolithic implements of war.
